THE MOVIE

effect of movies

The entertainment industry is no doubt one industry that finds its way to every human being every day. Before the day runs out, a person looks at the television, listens to the radio or makes use of a smartphone, computer or looks at a banner while driving or walking through a part of the street.

Let us examine the effects of the movie industry on human beings especially young people and children because they are the ones that really know how to watch movies.

You will eventually become what you spend most of your time with
Every day, one way or the other we consciously or unconsciously take in what the entertainment industry sends out. The truth is that at the end, you will only be able to bring out what you deposited into yourself. Everything you say and do, everything that you send out is what you have inside you. A person ultimately becomes made of what they have passed through.

What you take in will always come through the five senses. That is why Jesus said that a good tree cannot bring out evil fruit (Luke 6:14, Matthew 7:18). By their fruits, you shall know them. So as a person who cares about who you are. You care about your reputation so you care about what you send out.

Since you care about what you send out, you should really care about what you take in. So the next time someone asks the question “who are you?” you might want to say I am what I have taken in through the five senses and people know me by the ones I have let out in my own way.

When it comes to entertainment, you will only take in using your eyes and your ears, the most important being the eye because it takes in the pictures and the actions. The eye is important because whatever a man thinks will be seen (in the mind) and every picture you conjure will be based on the ones you have already seen.

What do you see?
Anytime you look, you see one of two or three things. (1) You will see exactly what is there. (2) You will see what you think you should see. At times people look at a thing after they had thought of what they should see when they look. You know how the brain works; this can take place within a second. So it is possible that when they look, they are not seeing what is really there but what they want to see.

What you see or how you see a thing could also depend on what you’ve known. What you’ve known (or your state of mind) will also determine how you react to what you see. For instance, if you know that a fight or wrestling is being acted, you will react to it in a way different from the next person who actually thinks that what  he is seeing is actually a real expression of anger form both parties.

The subconscious mind
Talking about what you take in; do you know that some of the things you take in go to the subconscious mind? These three points will help you understand what the subconscious mind is:
1. The subconscious mind stores your life experiences, memories, and beliefs
2. The subconscious will store thoughts that have been thought a lot of times or repeatedly
3. The subconscious mind controls your involuntary actions and your emotions.

How does the subconscious mind work?
You might want to know how things get into the subconscious mind and also, how you release these things that find their way into the subconscious mind. From point 1 and 2 above, you will see that the subconscious mind is filled with experiences, beliefs and repeated thoughts.

Making use of something we experience regularly will really help us understand how these things happen. Everyone is involved in some activity or the other. These activities include sports, singing, dancing, and some other group or personal thing not mentioned.
Sometimes you stay with a relative or a friend so much that at some point you behave or act the same way they do.

Have you ever found yourself speaking or laughing like your pastor or a famous personality you love listening to? Maybe you found yourself laughing like your pastor or your close friend and after doing that you pause for a bit and then say to yourself “I was really saying that like my pastor.”

Do you realize that you did that when you did not even plan to do it. It was an involuntary action that was triggered by your subconscious mind. You have listened to this person, you’ve been exposed to his actions so many times that your subconscious mind stores them and since they control your involuntary actions, you act them out without being able to stop it before it happens.

The truth is you cannot tell for sure to what extent how what the subconscious mind stores affects your behavior and judgement. It really goes beyond involuntary actions: These things are really part of you, they become who you are.

Sometimes when we watch an interesting movie, we become so captivated that we become oblivious or unaware of what is happening physically around us because we have gotten to the point where we really believe we are seeing some real life images. When it gets to this stage some things go straight to the subconscious and because the conscious mind is not there to filter or block the bad ones, everything will just become stored and the person you are will be changing when you are not even aware of it.

So what exactly do we see in the movies we watch and what do they want us to see?
Over 99 percent of the movies Christians watch are acted by those who have little or absolutely no regard for the things of God.

Although it is true that some of the actors and actresses are not aware of what they send out, it does not really matter here.

   1. Revenge: This might not be affecting you but it’s probably affecting your children or your younger relatives. When we were young, we loved these “bad guy” versus “good guy” movies or stories. In these movies, at first, the ‘bad guy(s)’ beats up the ‘good guy’ but at the end, the ‘good guy’ goes for revenge. The ‘good guy’ beats up and in most cases kills the ‘bad guy(s)’ as pay back for what they did to him. Children love and respect the protagonists.

These movies present him/her as a ‘good guy’ of hero and so they kids want to be like him. They fantasize and think of these things happening to them. I tell you what; there is no strong kid who won’t love revenge or bully. The things they watch have become part of them because they don’t have the ability to consciously filter the bad part of what they are watching. They think about these things over and over again since they have fewer things to worry about at their age and these things really affect their judgement.

The next time you watch a movie, watch out for this message of revenge they will be sending to your mind. Just tell yourself “that is wrong, that is not the way it should be done.” Remember the bible really condemns revenge. See Romans 12 : 17 and Matthew 6 : 43 – 48.

    2. Love: Today, children believe in love. A word they don’t even understand. It is a word that most grownups don’t understand. Children these days believe that they can fall in love (and start intimate relationships) at 12, 13, or even make love at a younger age. Although these things are not entirely caused by movies, they really gain power through movies.

Today young people believe that they have to fall in love with that intelligent person in school. Movies have twisted the meaning of love. A lot of people lust in the name of love. These things have become part of them; the things they see have gotten into their subconscious mind. These actions they see have become part of their subconscious which controls their emotions.

Today a lot of youths become love sick because they think that they must fall in love with that intelligent, handsome or rich person they are working with not minding what this relationship will do to their goals or how it will affect them in the long  run. It is not wrong to love but when you find yourself crying for someone who is helping or helped you fornicate, someone who could take away your virginity; when you find yourself crying for a person simply because he is not around you or has talked to someone else and ignored you that day then something is really wrong with the way you take things.

If you love someone (when you are not supposed to marry), you should only be happy God has created such a person and you will always want to see the person happy. It should not make you leave the important things you should do to think about someone or waste precious time you should use to create a good future for yourself on some temporary and lustful relationship.

   3. Swearing and Joking with God’s name: Today we see swearing frequently in movies. If you do not know what God says about swearing, you will accept it and join them in swearing because you respect and love them and you love what they do as well. In Matthew 5:34-37 Jesus Christ warns us against swearing.

You may hear someone exclaim “Jesus Christ” in a movie or use the name in some other situation. These people don’t know how to recognise God in life. They are just there to help you use the name of God the way you are not supposed to. If Jehovah is not used anyhow, don’t you think the name Jesus should also be accorded the necessary respect?

   4. Fornication: Movies will always tell you to fall in love and fornicate or have sex when you are not yet married. This is also wrong but most youth buy it and sometimes it can be really difficult to let them know that what they are doing is wrong. They have watched this over and over again to the point that it seems right to do these things.

They did not have the consciousness to resist such beliefs when they started watching these movies. If you know youths very well, you will know that they are very likely to do whatever they think is okay irrespective of what anybody else thinks. They even do the wrongs things they enjoy; how much more the things they think is right.
    5. Stealing: You might not notice this but this is what we see in 21st century movies. Today the so-called heroes steal and do all sorts of things whether good or evil. Please do not be ignorant of the devices of the devil. It is not wrong to watch movies but if you do not have the consciousness to resist or filter these bad actions, they will get into you, (your subconscious mind) and you will start acting them without knowing. A word is enough for the wise.

     6. Relationships: Young people no longer know how to ask God for a life partner. They don’t know how to behave in order to get and keep a good partner. They trust in indecent dressing to get a person and playing “games” to keep him/her.

They have formed this belief out of the things they see mostly in movies. Instead of trusting each other, they want to suspect and tempt the other person. This is not the way it should go. These things cannot get anyone a good relationship. They only bring disappointments. One should always try to change the bad things about the other person and behave well so that the other person will not have to look elsewhere for the necessary comfort and love.

The entertainment industry is one good industry though but we must guard against the bad way of doing things they send out. Pride, lying, disrespect and a lot of other things happen in movies. When watching movies, it is advisable to put on a ‘mind filter’ so you don’t end up receiving evil into your life. You should also be careful when choosing movies to watch. Sometimes you can tell from the cover or title that a movie contains scenes of sex or full of bad actions and images.

Parents should find time to watch movies with their children so that they can point out the wrong things and give the kids appropriate advice. If they are not corrected at a tender age, it can be very difficult to alter the belief of a grownup, especially a teenager.
